Understanding Wireless Charging and How it Works Reading Charging Accessories from Your iPhone 3 minutes Next Mastering iPhone Gestures

There appears to be some conflicting information about using your iPhone as a wireless charger. To help clear things up, here’s what’s currently possible, and what might be coming soon.

With the latest iPhone models, Apple has made using your phone as a charger possible with a lesser known feature: reverse charging via USB-C. That’s right, your iPhone isn’t just a power hungry device anymore, it can now give a little juice back when your smaller accessories are running low.

More Modularity

Building on the concept of modularity in previous articles about MagSafe it would be remiss not to mention this added layer of modular utility built into your iPhone. The first MagSafe informational article breaks down what MagSafe is and how it can work for you. The next one took a look into how it works for Android, found in the article MagSafe for Android. It’s not quite MagSafe modularity level useful, but it does add to the ecosystem in a modular, practical way.

Situational Awareness

Maybe it’s your AirPods, an Apple Watch, or even another USB-C gadget that is low on battery. A quick connection to your iPhone 15 or newer can help it get through the day. iPhone 15 and later models can reverse charge smaller devices that support Power Delivery at up to 4.5 watts, just enough to get you through a tight spot.

If you forget to charge one of your peripheral devices, or need a slight battery percent increase, having the option to plug in for the extra battery can save the day on a drained device.

What About Wireless Reverse Charging?

It’s a fair question and one that’s caused a bit of confusion. Some Apple focused sites speculate that wireless reverse charging is in development or testing, especially since Apple quietly discontinued the MagSafe Battery Pack. However, as of now, this feature isn’t available on any iPhone.

A Handy Trick

If you're already carrying your phone, then being able to pull double duty by charging your accessories on the go is a real bonus. It’s one more reason to consider modular, adaptable tech, especially when paired with our own MagSafe gear for travel and daily life.

Though the charging is through the cable, it is still convenient to pair the situation with MagSafe. Consider our PureCrystal Shield Case for a layer of protection, and prop your phone up with a grip and stand to monitor the battery. Keep an eye on your phone battery while charging another device, don’t drain your phone excessively to give your other device some battery, this is supposed to help in a pinch, not be a dedicated way to charge. So, using a Mag SleekGrip-X to prop up the phone to keep an eye on the battery is a good idea. Consider a reasonable percent to use to give your other device just enough to last until you get home.

Charging in Summation

iPhones can charge another device with a USB-C cable up to 4.5w, but can not currently wirelessly charge other devices. If rumors have any truth to them, iPhone 17 may have this capability.
